Chimney Service…since 1978
While driving
to Newport, Rhode Island on Spring break in 1977, I witnessed a chimney
fire outside of Jamestown on Route 1A north. Traffic had been stopped
in both directions and I left the car to speak with one of the
firefighters who explained to me what was going on. I was twenty-six
years old and a secondary school teacher in Philadelphia…
and I was intrigued. Less than a year later, I trained with a couple of
chimney sweeps in Chester County, PA, and subsequently opened my own
chimney sweeping business, The Towne Sweepe, in the greater
Philadelphia market. This was the time of the first energy crisis and
the first wave of “modern” airtight stoves was
sweeping the country as dazed citizens looked for alternatives to their
oil and gas fired heating systems.
Monday-Friday: 9am-5:30pm; Saturday: 11am-3pm; Sundays (September, October and November): 12noon-4pm.
In
1978, I joined the nascent National Chimney Sweep Guild and attended
their second annual convention in Chicago. There I took the first
certification exam for chimney sweeps. Since then, I have updated that
certification every three years and annually taken continuing education
classes, hands-on seminars, and instructional classes sponsored by
manufacturer’s of solid fuel appliances; wood and pellet
stoves. My interest was piqued by the range of new products coming into
the fireplace market, and in 1979 I founded Pennsylvania Firebacks,
Inc., and with a partner began manufacturing and marketing updated
models of an arcane but attractive fireplace accessory (Fireback.com).
Being on the manufacturing end of wood heating and fireplace products
gave me great insight into trends and familiarity with existing and
cutting edge products, and has always given me the access of an insider
into the larger industry.
By 1986, I had five trucks in service and employed as many as fourteen
office staff and service technicians seasonally. When I moved to
western New Jersey in the early 90’s, I opened
Terry’s Chimney Service, the latest incarnation of which is
now serving Taos and Northern New Mexico. With two carefully trained
service technicians and our office manager, we keep it simple and
efficient. The service we provide is what our clients remember. We
strive to be friendly but professional in the conduct of business, keep
our clients informed, and are always aware that the community we serve
is also the one we live in.
